Nothing beats the rush of racing down a swiftly flowing river in a trusty rubber raft, and there’s no better place to experience the powerful thrill of Colorado Whitewater than the Eagle River, a tributary of the mighty Colorado River. The Lower Eagle River runs between Vail and Beaver Creek, so you can enjoy a whitewater rafting trip close to lodging and still have time for other activities. The Eagle River is a moderate whitewater adventure, and local guide companies can customize a rafting trip to meet your adventure desire.
If you’re looking to kayak whitewater while you’re in Avon, you either need to be an expert paddler or choose your section of river carefully. The Ute Indians named the Eagle River because it has so many tributaries, similar to an eagle’s tail feathers. The section of the Eagle River running through Avon is generally rafted from late May to early July. The lower Eagle (west of Dowd Junction) is tamer with time to relax and enjoy the colorful canyons of red, yellow and pale brown sandstone, speckled by sagebrush and junipers. Local outfitters can make seasonal recommendations about kayaking based on river runoff and weather conditions.
