The Birds of Prey weekend in Beaver Creek & Avon isn’t just for hardcore ski-fans (though that’s a huge plus) — it’s a spirited, early-season mountain festival, full of speed, music, mountain charm and fun for all types of visitors. Whether you’re there for the world-class races, the après-ski vibe, or simply a picturesque escape into snowy Colorado mountains, you’ll find plenty to love. The event features men’s World Cup alpine ski races (Downhill, Super-G, Giant Slalom) plus a full roster of free concerts, beer tastings, family activities and more.
Here’s your ultimate guide to what to do, where to go, and how to make the most of the Birds of Prey weekend.
The heart of Birds of Prey is the racing!
-
Thursday (Dec 4) & Friday (Dec 5): Men’s Downhill races
-
Saturday (Dec 6): Men’s Super-G
-
Sunday (Dec 7): Men’s Giant Slalom
Tips for race-day:
-
Arrive early to secure a good vantage spot and beat the crowds.
-
Use the free shuttles! CORE Transit buses connect Avon & Vail to downvalley neighbors. Avon Transit offers free buses to Beaver Creek Village, and shuttles are available from the village to the finish area at Red Tail Stadium. TIP: It can take up to an hour from the base. Parking is available at the Elk and Bear lots.
-
Dress in layers: Even mountain finish areas are chilly with wind and altitude. Be sure to bring a hat, gloves, good boots (snow/ice likely), sunglasses, sunscreen & ear protection if you’re close to the finish blasts or crowds.
-
Bring a pair of binoculars or a good zoom camera to track the skiers.
- If the lift-access is open: ski or ride around Beaver Creek Resort, explore the trails.
